The progress of the Indian monsoon
Heavy rain triggers flooding in parts of India, despite some areas seeing below-average rainfall.

The monsoon is in full swing over South Asia.
India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have all seen heavy downpours triggering flooding and landslides.
In recent days, it has been the northeastern states of India which have seen some of the worst flooding.
Despite that, the majority of this region has still seen less rain than its average annual rainfall because the rains set in so late here.
Assam has received 22 percent less rain than expected, while Meghalaya and Nagaland’s rainfall has been 43 and 42 percent below average respectively.
The eastern state of Gujarat, as well as Himachal Pradesh and Punjab in the north, have also had less rain than they would hope for but are expecting some of the heaviest downpours over the next few days.
India Meteorology Department had previously predicted that this monsoon season would bring a bumper amount of rain.
Although it got off to a late start, it is forecast to end later than usual this year. The monsoon brings about 75 percent of India’s annual rainfall and the below-average monsoon in the past two years has led to major problems for farmers and numerous water shortages.
