Ted Cruz, a fiery conservative Texas senator, swept to victory in Iowa’s Republican caucus, overcoming billionaire Donald Trump and Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Among Democrats, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders rode a wave of voter enthusiasm to a virtual tie with Hillary Clinton, long considered her party’s frontrunner.

Cruz’s victory in Monday’s caucuses was a harsh blow for Trump, the supremely confident property mogul who has stirred up the Republican field for months with controversial statements about women and minorities.

The focus of the 2016 US presidential race now switches to next week’s New Hampshire primary.
