People across Europe hold vigils for those killed in the attack on satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

Vigils have been held across Europe following a deadly attack on the satirical French newspaper Charlie Hebdo. People raised pens in a silent declaration that free speech would not be suppressed.

Hooded gunmen stormed the Paris offices of a weekly satirical magazine known for lampooning Islam and other religions, shooting dead at least 12 people, including two police officers and eight journalists.

Four well-known cartoonists were among the Charlie Hebdo staff killed in the attack, including the paper’s editor Stephane Charbonnier, known as ‘Charb’.

Across Europe, thousands of people joined candlelight vigils to remember the dead.

"Je Suis Charlie" or "I am Charlie" began trending on social media shortly after the attack as a tribute to the slain journalists.
French President Francois Hollande said it was a terrorist act "of exceptional barbarism," adding that other attacks have been thwarted in France in recent weeks.
Rallies were held in London(***)s Trafalgar Square as well as Paris, Madrid, Berlin and Brussels.
Thousands gathered for a candle light vigil on Place de la Republique in central Paris, hours after the attack.
