International Women’s Day dates back to the beginning of the 20th century and has been observed by the United Nations since 1975.

According to the UN, March 8 is a day when women are recognised for their achievements without regard to nationality, ethnicity, language, economics or politics. It is also an occasion to call for further change.

Thousands of women also marched in Beirut, Lebanon, demanding a law to protect women from domestic violence.
