Kurdish people celebrate Nowruz, the Persian New Year festival, in the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir. The trial of Rios Montt on charges of genocide and crimes against humanity, which led to the deaths of at least 1,771 Ixil Mayans, is the first time a country has prosecuted an ex-head of state in a national court on such charges.

Karen refugees from Myanmar flee their refugee camp in northern Thailand as fire breaks out. At least 32 refugees died in a raging blaze at this camp, which houses about 3,300 people. The fire is believed to have been started by a cooking accident, and destroyed about 100 huts.
