Severe storms slam the US

Severe winter storms leave trail of destruction in South, while snow forces schools and highways to shut in Midwest.

A takeaway twister
A storm-wracked Subway sandwich store in Mount Juliet, Tennessee. Forecasters estimated the peak wind speed to be 185kph, qualifying the tornado as an EF-2 twister.
Gift wrapped
Metal siding is wrapped around a car that was inside a garage workshop in Mount Juliet. The storm system spawned at least seven tornadoes as it moved through the state.

The violent storm severely damaged a Tennessee newspaper distribution centre. The path of the damage was about 150 metres wide.
