Egypt(***)s ex-president Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison on June 2. Although the sentence was initially greeted with joy, demonstrations soon erupted after the acquittals of several Mubarak-era security officials.

The former president(***)s son, Gamal Mubarak, and his brother Alaa were sentenced only to the time already served. The two were convicted on some corruption charges but acquitted on others.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 60th year on the throne, the second monarch in UK history to reach the milestone. In an opulent Diamond Jubilee celebration, the members of the royal family will journey down the Thames in a "river pageant" of 1,000 boats.

Riot police clashed with left-wing protesters during a march by neo-Nazis on June 2 in Hamburg, Germany. The roughly 1,000 neo-Nazis came from across Germany for what they termed "the day of German future".
Myanmar democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi waved to refugees, many of whom were forced abroad by fighting and human rights abuses, during her visit to the Mae La refugee camp near the Thai-Myanmar border.
A fire at an upscale mall in Doha, Qatar, claimed the lives of 19 people, including 13 children, who were at a nursery. Witnesses claimed some of the mall(***)s sprinklers and smoke alarms did not work, and that mall officials did not quickly call an evacuation of the building.
