Egypt(***)s ex-president Hosni Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison on June 2. Although the sentence was initially greeted with joy, demonstrations soon erupted after the acquittals of several Mubarak-era security officials.

The former president(***)s son, Gamal Mubarak, and his brother Alaa were sentenced only to the time already served. The two were convicted on some corruption charges but acquitted on others.

Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 60th year on the throne, the second monarch in UK history to reach the milestone. In an opulent Diamond Jubilee celebration, the members of the royal family will journey down the Thames in a "river pageant" of 1,000 boats.
