More than two million Afghans are at risk from exposure to the harsh central Asian winter, according to a new UN report.

These people, living in makeshift camps for internally displaced persons around the capital, Kabul, are the poorest of the poor, having fled other parts of the country.
The situation in these camps is truly grim. Last year, Al Jazeera reported about many who died due to the cold, but this year the aid agencies are hoping the situation won’t repeat itself, and the UN is delivering emergency winter kits consisting of clothing and firewood.
Last winter saw record levels of snowfall in Afghanistan, and temperatures falling as low as -16 degrees Celsius.

Children are especially at risk in these camps: last winter, many died from the cold.
But this year, the UN is delivering emergency winter kits to the camps containing clothing, firewood, medicine, and other supplies.

About 30,000 internally displaced Afghans have made Kabul their home, according to the UN.
