Naji Ali drew over 12,000 cartoons, often reflecting Arab public opinion
The cartoons were sharply critical not just of the state of Israel, but also of Arab leaders
But that unabashed criticism led to death threats, frequent police detainments, and having to relocate first to Kuwait, and later to London
Al-Ali believed the Palestinian cause had fallen hostage to disunity among Arab leaders
Many of his cartoons dealt with the issue of Palestinian dispossession

But on August 29, 1987, he was shot in the head by unkown assailants as he headed to his London office. He was 50 years old
