After her husband was assassinated on his return from exile in the United States, Aquino was thrown into politics [AFP]
In March 1985, Aquino marched along with 2,000 women to the residence of Ferdinand Marcos, the then president, to protest against his 20-year rule [AFP]
In December 1985, Aquino announced her candidacy to run against Marcos in the presidential election [AFP]
Marcos won the poll, which was marred by allegations of fraud, prompting Aquino, here posing in front of a concrete bust of Marcos, to launch her "people power" movement [AFP]
Nearly one million people took to the streets to protest against election fraud and Marcos soon resigned [AFP]
After Marcos's resignation, Aquino was sworn in as president and was in power for six years [AFP]
During a national prayer meeting in Manila in 1989, Aquino, who was a devoted Roman Catholic, was greeted by Mother Teresa [Reuters]
Aquino remained involved in politics even after finishing her presidential term. In 2008, she participated in a rally against Gloria Arroyo, the current president of the Philippines [AFP]
On August 1, 2009, Aquino died at the age of 76 after a battle with cancer [Reuters]
