Soviet-era cinema: Preserving the old classics
Soviet-era films, domestic and foreign, are all now being preserved as part of the former communist country’s heritage.

Moscow – At the 2016 Moscow Film Festival, the expected glamour and sparkle was there, but Russian cinema-goers largely shun domestic films these days in favour of Hollywood blockbusters.
During the Soviet era, films were seen as a crucial way to spread communist ideals across a huge empire. In the midst of all the propaganda, there was also great quality.
About a million or so classic Soviet era films are being preserved as part of Russia’s cultural heritage in climate-controlled rooms of Russia’s State Film Fund.
