Independent films make a comeback in the Philippines

Rise in digital technology has led to nation’s leading actors lining up to star in low-budget films from new directors.

The Philippines has one of the oldest film industries in southeast Asia, and for many years was dominated by big budget studio productions.

But now digital technology and social media have led to what industry-watchers call “the democratisation of cinema” and an “indie” revival.

Some of the country’s best known actors are lining up to star in low-budget productions from first-time directors, and more small-budget films are being produced than big-budget features.
