Increasing public support for US gun rights?
The debate for gun control has been raging in the US for decades but recently gun rights advocates have gained a lead.
Two years after the Sandy Hook school shooting brought gun control back to the forefront of political conversation in America, a new Pew Research Center poll says that more Americans support gun rights than at any time in the past 20 years.
According to the Pew Poll, 52 percent of those polled said protecting the right of Americans to own guns is more important vs 46 percent who say controlling gun ownership is more important.
This debate has been raging in the United States for decades and now it seems that gun rights advocates are finally gaining a lead over those seeking tighter gun control.
Attitudes are also changing on how people view gun ownership. According to Pew’s new poll, 57 percent say guns protect people from becoming crime victims in 2012, 48 percent said that.
This poll comes out at a time when gun advocacy groups point out that there have been 94 school shootings since December 14, 2012, the day of the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting, resulting in 45 deaths and 78 non-fatal gunshot wounds thus far.
