Berlin celebrates women film-makers

Acceptance of 100 films directed by women at ongoing film festival goes against the grain of Germany’s culture.

The Berlin film festival has always had a reputation for being edgy and different. Out of 400 films being premiered this year, 100 are directed by women.

This is different from the rest of Germany, where entrepreneurship among women is comprehensively stifled by a lack of kindergarten places – which makes it difficult for mothers to work.

It is not a financial issue; instead it is cultural, with working mothers frowned on and even offered money to stay at home.

In that sense the acceptance of women at the film festival really does go against the grain.
