Top Berlin honour for film featuring convicts
Documentary about convicts rehearsing Shakespeare’s play bags Golden Bear at film festival.

The top prize at this year’s Berlin Film Festival has gone to Caesar Must Die, an Italian documentary about convicts rehearsing William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
The docu-drama, directed by brothers Vittorio and Paolo Taviani, documents prisoners in a high-security Roman prison as they prepare for a production of Shakespeare’s play about the rise and fall of the emperor.
The recipient of the top Golden Bear takes on an added significance for featuring inmates, some convicted of murder and connections to the mafia, acting out a play regarded as a statement about honour and brotherhood.
