Depardieu says au revoir to France

French actor to give up his French citizenship in protest against the tax hikes imposed by the French government.

One of France’s most famous actors is giving up his citizenship and is moving to Belgium.

Gerard Depardieu is handing back his passport because of tax increases on the wealthy imposed by the Socialist government of Francois Hollande.

Next year, the top rate of income tax in France is due to become 75 per cent on earnings above $1.31 million. It is currently 50 per cent in Belgium.
