Hobbit fever grips New Zealand

Increased tourism due to The Hobbit films predicted to inject about $2bn into country’s economy.

Up to 100,000 fans crammed into every possible vantage point to celebrate Wellington’s favourite son, director Peter Jackson and his latest film, ‘The Hobbit’.

The capital city Wellington has just hosted the world premiere of ‘The Hobbit’, the first prequel of a trilogy to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.

The Hobbit trilogy is set 60 years before the Rings movies, but Jackson said it has benefited from being made after the conclusion of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy saga.

Al Jazeera’s Belinda Henley reports from Wellington.
