October 12 marks the 80th birthday of one of the most famous statues in the world: Cristo Redentor, in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro.

The statue, translated as ‘Christ the Redeemer’ in English, has been photographed millions of times, but there is one picture that stands out from the rest.

Custodio Coimbra, the man who took the image, describes in his own words the snapshot of a lifetime.
