Independent directors in the Philippines are turning tales of woe into international triumphs.

Asia’s largest film festival has come to a close in a South Korean city, wrapping up with greater focus on independent filmmakers.
There were 103 world premieres at this year’s Pusan International Film Festival, many of them low-budget arthouse films that traditionally have had difficulty finding an audience.
In the Philippines, the rise of digital technology has fuelled a return to filmmaking led by a growing breed of independent directors who are turning tales of woe into international triumphs.
