Al Jazeera announces sponsorship of MoFORCE, a journalism training foundation in Africa

December 13 2006, Doha – Al Jazeera English has demonstrated its commitment to media and training in East Africa by joining the worlds’ media leaders as a sponsor of media training in East Africa through an annual scholarship donation to the Mohamed Amin Foundation’s MoFORCE* Training for Television and Film.
This scholarship will assist a talented young East African who comes from a financially under-privileged family.
The first Al Jazeera English scholarship was awarded to Edvine Maloba, a 25-year-old Kenyan who has been working as a self taught freelance video editor, producer and cameraman.
Sadly, Edvine lost his father in a car accident in 2001 and his mother was made redundant in 1998.
With five boys in the family they have struggled to meet the family’s needs as well as the costs of basic education.
The cost of technical training has been completely out of reach for him so Al Jazeera English language channel’s support will provide him with the training he needs to reach his full potential.

About the Mohamed Amin Foundation
The Mohamed Amin Foundation was established in 1998 after the tragic death of world-renowned photo-journalist Mohamed Amin to give East African young men and women solid skills and abilities that would help them meet the technological challenges of the 21st Century and help raise the standards of communication in East Africa.
In the same year, a training institute, MoFORCE Training for Television and Film, was established at the studios of the late “Mo” Amin. The Training Centre is a project of The Mohamed Amin Foundation.
Since then, its’ graduates, known as the MoFORCE have been taking up key roles in the media and filmmaking industry in the region.
This hands-on training centre has received international recognition and has grown to become regarded as the top television and film institute in East Africa.
It’s students and alumni have taken part in international exchanges with other media institutes around the world and their products have won international awards and have been seen on international broadcasts in Europe and Africa.
The training centre rigorously vets applicants for desire and ability. Unfortunately, many of the most deserving candidates cannot meet the cost of fees.
The Mohamed Amin Foundation has appealed over the years to leading media agencies and NGO’s to join a sponsorship programme that ensures that these talented young East African candidates can receive the training that will help them to relate the African stories to Africa and the rest of the world.
Al Jazeera English has seen the worth of this programme and has come to the fore through an annual scholarship donation that will help the training centre continue to deliver its valuable training and assist a worthy individual with the required fees that will allow them to study.
