India eyes housing for all by 2022

Government tries to boost foreign investment in construction sector, but critics say programme does not benefit poorest.

The government in India is trying to boost foreign investment in the construction sector, as it tries to launch an ambitious programme that would give housing for all in the next eight years.

More than 90 million people have moved to cities over the last decade, but many end up living in slums because of a lack of affordable housing.

Foreign investment would fast track construction of homes, but critics say that the poorest Indians would not be able to afford those privately-constructed houses.
