Strike threat ahead of Bangladesh election

Opposition calls for new action ahead of election in nation which clocked up more than 70 general strike days last year.

Opposition leaders have called for a general strike in Bangladesh in the run-up to Bangladesh’s January 5 general election.

Businesses have been closed, transport networks have been restricted and the economy has slowed.

Bangladesh has experienced more than 70 general strike days in the past 12 months and political turmoil has threatened the country’s multi-billion dollar garment industry.
