US islanders battle telecom giant

Fire Island residents take on phone company Verizon to save their telecoms network from being replaced.

Residents of Fire Island, just outside New York City, are battling a US corporate giant to save their telecoms network.

Phone company Verizon wants to replace old copper wire landlines with a wireless system.

But locals say the new system will limit their internet services and stop them from making important calls.

Al Jazeera’s John Terrett reports.
