Afghan bank fraud tests Kabul’s commitment

President Hamid Karzai’s brother, a major bank shareholder, conspicuously absent from trial.

Two founders of Afghanistan’s Kabul Bank have been sentenced to prison for stealing hundreds of millions of dollars.

The fraud almost led to the bank’s collapse in 2010, and the case is seen as a test of the government’s commitment to fighting corruption.

President Hamid Karzai’s brother Mahmoud, a major bank shareholder, was conspicuously absent from the trial.
