Cyprus fiscal mess spreads in divided island

Cypriots share an island but are divided since 1974 by ethnicity, currency and geopolitics.

Cypriots face another day in the economic deep-freeze – banks are to remain shut until at least Thursday in an effort to stop savers withdrawing their money.

But the effects of this crisis are only being felt in the south of the island.

The north, occupied by Turkey since the seventies, has little to do with the Greek influenced south.

But the north has economic problems of its own.
