Locusts become Israel’s latest delicacy
As the insect appears on restaurant menus, rabbis are divided on whether it meets strict Jewish dietary laws.

Most people would not expect to see a jar of locusts in the kitchen of a restaurant, yet it is the main ingredient in a new dish created in Jerusalem by chef Moshe Basson.
He is experimenting with different ways to cook them, even making a dessert. But one of the main questions for Jewish customers is: Are locusts kosher? That is, does their preparation and sale meet strict Jewish dietary laws?

According to Basson, they are. But as Al Jazeera’s Nicole Johnston reports from Jerusalem, rabbinical opinion on the matter appears to be divided, with some rabbis against the consumption of locusts.
Others say if there exists a family tradition, mainly in Yemeni and Moroccan Jewish communities, then it is fine and kosher.
