Push to privatise Mexico oil sector hits snag

President’s proposal to open up industry to foreign investment to boost production meets opposition in congress.

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s proposals to open up the oil industry to private investment in order to boost production of the valuable resource has been met with opposition in congress.

Opponents of the legislation in Mexico, which is among the world’s top oil producing nations but has been closed off to foreign investment for decades, say they do not trust international corporations to put national interest first.
