New research in Australia suggests that chemical changes in the body while losing weight may be the reason why people struggle to keep the lost weight off.
The research studied 40 patients as they spent 10 weeks losing an average of 14 per cent of their weight. They found that within a year, almost all had put much the weight back on.
Researchers found that after losing weight, the participants retained unusually high levels of the hormone that encourages hunger, and low levels of the hormone that suppresses it.
