Europe has successfully launched its lightweight Vega rocket from the Kourou base in French Guiana.

The new rocket is meant to provide a safe, reliable and competitive means to carry observation satellites into orbit.

More than $1.3bn has been invested in the Vega programme, with the aim of providing European nations with access to space.
