Hopes dim for Berlin’s historic gas lamps

Public pressure mounts against plan to replace part of city’s cultural heritage with electrical lamps to save funds.

Politicians in Berlin, Germany’s capital, are planning on replacing nearly all of the city’s historic gas street lamps with electrical ones in an effort to save funds.

Some residents are urging against the plan, saying the gas lamps are a vital part of the city’s identity and cultural heritage. But officials say they are too expensive to maintain.
