Italy’s ‘lost generation’

Unemployment and lack of career opportunities mean many young people cannot find long-term jobs.

Mario Monti, Italy’s new prime minister, faces many economic challenges as the cost of the country’s borrowing rises higher than the seven per cent level considered unsustainable by economists.

Unemployment currently stands at eight per cent, but youth unemployment is more than three times higher in a country where growing numbers of Italians under the age of 30 are finding it impossible to find a job.
