Hard times for ailing US mail industry

Unions say US Postal workers are paying price for bad management as industry comes under pressure.

The US Postal Service, with a staff of more than half a million workers, is the world’s seventh largest employer but one that is struggling to remain relevant in an increasingly digital age.

The home of ‘snail mail’ faces a myriad of problems including economic recession, a slump in mail volume, the internet and generous health and pension benefits for retirees that are slowly forcing it to cut services, facilities and jobs.
