America’s towering man of peace

Memorial honours Martin Luther King Jr, more than 40 years after the death of the civil-rights movement leader.

A new memorial in the US capital, dedicated to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr, honours his contributions to the country’s civil-rights movement.

Until the 1960s, black and white Americans were kept separate in public places – including schools and hotels.

But now, people of all races and religions will be able celebrate Dr King’s legacy at the National Mall – the preserve of memorials to former presidents and war heroes – which will welcome a towering man of peace.
