Going green in Abu Dhabi’s desert

Springing up the most unlikely environment, Masdar City aims to be the world’s first zero-carbon emissions city.

Al Jazeera has been granted an exclusive access to what is billed as the world’s greenest city.

Springing up in the desert of Abu Dhabi, the plan is for Masdar City to provide carbon-free homes for 50,000 people.

Architects have been studying ancient Arab cities to discover how they survived without air conditioning, and are using the same methods to funnel air down to street level from a tall wind tower.

But the project is facing several obstacles, as Dan Nolan reports from Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.
