Shares in Japanese car giant Toyota have tumbled more than 15 per cent in a week as the company struggles to contain the fallout from a safety recall affecting millions of its cars, including its top-selling Camry and Corolla models.

The automaker has said it is closing in on a solution to the problem that could cause accelerator pedals to stick.

But the growing recall has badly dented the company’s reputation for quality and reliability.
