The British National Health System was launched on a wave of political optimism in the wake of the second world war – promising medical care from the cradle to the grave.
More than 60 years later it is the world’s largest publicly funded healthcare system.
The great boast of the NHS is that it is free to all, but it is rarely free from controversy.
Al Jazeera’s Harry Smith reports from London, England.
