Leipzig recalls Soviet Union’s end

East German city became one of the main flashpoints of 1989’s historic events.

Monday marks 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union.

The East German city of Leipzig became one of the main flashpoints in 1989.

Al Jazeera’s David Chater was a reporter in Germany at that time. Two decades on, he returns to retrace his steps.
