Rashid Sumaila

Dr Rashid Sumaila is a University Killam Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) in Interdisciplinary Ocean and Fisheries Economics at the Univer... moresity of British Columbia. He is also an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Pretoria. Dr. Sumaila has published hundreds of articles in top peer-reviewed journals and over 15 books. Since 2021, he has been named a "highly cited researcher" by Clarivate. His awards include the 2023 Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement and the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize. Sumaila played a significant role in the June 2022 WTO Agreement and is a key advocate for high seas management. He has spoken at the White House, various parliaments, the African Union, and the United Nations, and has met with King Charles and the Prince of Monaco. His Ph.D. in Economics is from the University of Bergen, and he holds a B.Sc. in Quantity Surveying from Ahmadu Bello University.
