Second Iraqi cleric assassinated

A group of armed men have killed a Muslim cleric in the town of Miqdadiya, the second assassination of an Association of Muslim Scholars’ member in Iraq in two days, witnesses and hospital officials say.

The AMS and other bodies have called for a poll boycott

It is not clear whether Shaikh Ghalib al-Zuhair’s killing has any connection with the death of Shaikh Faidh Muhammad Amin al-Faidhi, brother of the association’s official spokesman.

Shaikh Faidh was killed in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Mosul on Monday.

Miqdadiya lies 100km north-east of Baghdad, close to the provincial capital of Baquba.

The AMS, an influential Iraqi Muslim body, says its members have been targeted by US and interim Iraqi security forces as well as groups trying to fuel sectarian unrest.
