Palestinian officer shot dead

A member of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Force 17 elite guard was shot dead on Wednesday by Israeli troops.

    The killing occurred during an incursion by the Israeli troops into the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian medical sources said.


    Mahmud Zayed, 36, was shot six times in the head and chest by Israeli soldiers operating in a Palestinian autonomous area in the east of Ramallah, the sources said.


    The exact circumstances of the shooting were not immediately clear.


    His death raised the number of people killed since the start of the intifada in September 2000 to 3,267 including 2,465 Palestinians and 742 Israelis.
