At least 63 people have died - many of them in their cars while trying to flee – in a raging forest fire that has destroyed large swaths of land and many buildings in central Portugal.

At least 63 people have died - many of them in their cars while trying to flee - in a raging forest fire that has destroyed large swaths of land and many buildings in central Portugal.

 

Thick, billowing smoke is preventing aircraft from dropping water on the blaze.
