Report: 259 journalists jailed in 2016

More than 250 journalists, including Al Jazeera’s Mahmoud Hussein, were detained or jailed last year, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The figures show Egypt is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to work as a journalist.

Hussein, who was arrested in Egypt while on holiday, is awaiting trial on charges of spreading false news. Al Jazeera denies the allegations and is demanding his immediate release.
