A close and tight game, but a crucial three points – although Fulham will reflect that they should have taken one of their first-half chances.

As it was, the Arsenal keeper was not drawn into a save in the entire match.

“We prepared ourselves well and most of the times, we defended well,” the Fulham manager told Sky Sports.

“We wanted to block that power run from Gabriel, that action of the goal cannot happen.

“You see how high he can jump, but blocking the run better was key to control because we did that better in the other times.

“Our first half was so good, we didn’t let them play, and we had the first chances. A corner which was blocked by Cairney and two chances from Wilson that, on another day, they go in.

“Apart from some shots from the edge of the box, they didn’t create anything special.

“They controlled the possession better in the second half and unfortunately, we didn’t create any more clear-cut chances in the end.”

The Arsenal and Sweden striker, signed from Sporting Lisbon in the summer, has now gone nine goals without a game.

An unwelcome stat, but Arsenal will feel that when he finds his shooting boots, their title challenge will look even better.

“It is a really tough place to come, we have experienced that in the last few years,” the Arsenal manager told Sky Sports.

“We overcame their start and became much stronger in the second half of the game and found a way to score our goal.

“We gave the ball away a lot in transitions, so we changed the structure a little. We created some big, big chances and could have scored more, so overall, very happy. Another clean sheet is very good to see.

“Sometimes, a game goes through small details that we have to manage, and we are doing that better now.”

“There is a lot of expectation on us and we didn’t start the game the way we wanted to,” the Arsenal forward told Sky Sports.

“We have the experience now, having not had the results we wanted here in recent years, to turn the game, and we are happy with that in the dressing room.

“It was a tough start, but I just want to get the ball and get going. I’m happy with the performance.

“We have some big guys in the box; my corners at the start of the game were a bit rubbish, but [for the goal] Gabriel did well to get the flick on.

“For me, [the overturned penalty decision] was a penalty, I felt a big contact on my right knee before [Kevin] got the ball.

“The mentality for me is that we win in any context and that will help us get over the line.”

Not a single shot on target for Fulham but that is two on the bounce for Arsenal without their keeper being tested.

That is three defeats on the bounce for the west Londoners. The first half performance deserves a lot more, and although not a vintage Arsenal display it was more than enough to see home the job in the second period once they had the lead.

The win moves the Gunners three points clear of Manchester City at the top.

Liverpool can cut that lead to a point when they play Manchester United on Sunday.

The Gunners see it out. Fulham can’t muster a chance.
