- Erling Haaland inspired a Manchester City fightback from 1-0 down to beat Chelsea 3-1 and move into the Premier League top four at the Blues’ expense at the Etihad Stadium.
- City recovered from a nightmare start to Abdukodir Khusanov’s debut as he gifted the visitors the opening goal, scored by Noni Madueke.
- But Josko Gvardiol levelled for Pep Guardiola’s side just before half-time and Haaland showed his blend of strength and skill to chip in 22 minutes from time.
- The Norwegian then turned provider for the in-form Phil Foden to secure City’s fourth win in five league games after just one in their previous nine.
- Chelsea, who have won just once in their last seven Premier League games, fall to sixth and will likely reflect on the need to upgrade goalkeeper Robert Sanchez after his positioning led to Haaland’s crucial goal.

‘These moments will make us better’
Chelsea’s boss Enzo Maresca has told Sky Sports that his side could have scored two or three in the early part of the match, but said the second goal changed the game.
[Robert Sanchez] knows he has to do better,” he said, after the goalkeeper was lobbed while in no-man’s land for that goal by Haaland.
“We are making progress,” Maresca added. “We are better than one or two months ago … these moments will make us better.”
Guardiola declines to criticise Khusanov despite rocky start
The 20-year-old defender, signed this week, was at fault for Chelsea’s opener as he let the ball bounce over him and then under-hit his header back to goalkeeper Ederson, allowing Nicolas Jackson to nip in and square the ball for Noni Madueke to score.
A minute later the Uzbekistan international was booked for a challenge on Cole Palmer and was eventually replaced early in the second half by John Stones.
“The players were together. That was massively important. Any player can make a mistake,” Guardiola said after the game.
“The fans always support the new players. He’s so young. He will learn.”
Next up for City and Chelsea
This was the first of City’s “two cup finals” as Guardiola put it, with the other coming on Wednesday night against Club Brugge.
The English champions must beat the Belgian side to reach the Champions League playoff round after collapsing from 2-0 up to lose 4-2 at Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.
City will then face a tough task away at second-placed Arsenal in the league on February 2.
Chelsea, meanwhile, will have a bit of time to puzzle over what’s gone wrong.
Their next game is a Premier League London derby at home to West Ham on February 3.
Haaland scores 24th goal of the season in all competitions
Despite City’s struggles, Haaland has remained a reliable source of goals as he took his tally for the season to 24, six of which have come in the last six games.
Meanwhile, Foden slotted home his sixth goal in his last four league games after being put through by Haaland.
Haaland hails City’s ‘spirit’
A beaming Haaland has told Sky Sports that it was a “great performance” by City to come back and control the game after a shaky start.
“We showed great spirit … Chelsea went man against man and there was loads of space … sometimes even Manchester City can go direct and that’s a good thing,” he said.
Haaland said that debutant Omar Marmoush showed he has “something special”, especially in the first half.
“You can see why City bought him,” Haaland said. “He’s going to be a fantastic player for us.”
Haaland back to his best
The Norwegian was superb in the second half, scoring his 18th Premier League goal of the season, laying on Foden’s winner, and generally being a menace.

Recap of the match
Manchester City bounced back after conceding an early goal to beat Chelsea 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium, sparing the blushes of their debutant Abdukodir Khusanov whose error gifted the visitors the lead.
The Uzbek defender, signed this week from French side Lens, got his City career off to the worst possible start when his mistake in the third minute allowed Nicolas Jackson to steal the ball and square it for Noni Madueke to put Chelsea in front.
After a nervy start, City settled and began to dictate possession and the tempo of the game.
City struck back with Gvardiol, levelling three minutes before half-time by converting a rebound.
Erling Haaland’s physicality caused all kinds of problems across Chelsea’s backline in the second half.
He put the hosts in front after 68 minutes when he ran through on goal from an Ederson long ball, turning inside to put Chabolah on his backside, and chipping the ball over Sanchez, who had rushed off his line.
Chelsea looked a little unconvincing as they sought an equaliser and were vulnerable to counterattacks.
Haaland turned provider for City’s third goal after another long Ederson pass, holding the ball up before slipping it between two Chelsea defenders to send Foden through on goal, with the England international cooly slotting home.
How the table stands
The win sees City move up to fourth with 41 points – still 12 points off the league leaders Liverpool – while Chelsea slip to sixth.
