Iran war updates: US launches ‘additional round of strikes’

Sanaa – Both Yemen’s internationally recognised government and the Houthi group began mobilising fighters in late June.

On July 3, the first publicly announced flight between Tehran and Sanaa for more than a decade landed in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital, creating new tensions.

Fighting during the next day between the two sides in western Yemen’s Hodeidah governorate killed dozens, the worst violence in four years.

Yemen’s war, now more than 10 years old, had been cold since a truce was agreed in 2022. But, with the Houthis’ main ally Iran fighting the US and bombing the Gulf, the conflict in the Middle East’s poorest country may be about to reignite, plunging Yemen back into large-scale war.

The UK’s Foreign Office has summoned Iranian Charge d’Affaires Ali Nasimfar, it said, “in response to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qods Force’s (IRGC-QF) role in directing the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right (IMCR) to carry out a series of attacks across Europe between March and May”.

“IRGC activity attempts to undermine the safety and security of the UK and our allies. Despite repeated warnings, Iran’s intelligence services have not ceased in their hostile activity. Instead, Iran has sought to intensify its malign behaviour, which is completely unacceptable,” the office said in a statement.

“The summons follows steps taken by the UK government this week to hold the Iranian regime to account,” it added.

Jordanian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi has met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, DC.

The two ministers discussed strengthening the Jordanian-US partnership and efforts to end the escalation in the region.

The meeting comes as Iran’s army says it launched drone attacks on “US facilities” at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Azraq.

Mahmoud Khalil, who has been targeted for deportation by the Trump administration over his pro-Palestine advocacy in the country, is suing the US federal government and several private groups.

He is alleging that they were part of a conspiracy to suppress criticism of Israel through a campaign to dox, jail and ultimately deport student activists.

The civil rights suit, filed on Tuesday, names the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, as the architect of what it describes as a conspiracy to target members of the pro-Palestinian movement by smearing them as antisemites.

According to the lawsuit, those efforts were furthered by Canary Mission and Betar, two pro-Israel groups that maintain online lists of Israel’s critics, often alongside unsubstantiated claims that they are affiliated with Hamas.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has released a statement expressing grave concern about the latest attacks on shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

At least two seafarers were killed on Monday night, and several others were injured, the statement said.

“The cycle of escalation must end. These actions carry profound human costs and consequences that will be felt across the region and far beyond its borders,” the IMO added.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, says the US military’s attack on a ranger post in Hormozgan is “the latest example of America’s heinous war crimes”.

“The list of America’s crimes against Iranians grows longer every day, and with each passing day, America reveals a new layer of its enmity towards Iran,” he said, referring to the attack on Tuesday morning in the village of Seyed Jowzar, Hajjiabad County, in northern Hormozgan.

The attack killed three members of “the hardworking ranger” Javad Hasanzadeh’s family, Baghaei noted.

“This is merely the latest example of America’s heinous war crimes over the past four and a half months, which began with the assassination of Iranian leaders, children, women, and men in Tehran and Minab and Lamard.”

A projectile has struck a location near the city of Hajiabad in Iran’s southern Hormozgan province, according to the Mehr news agency.

Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri has told Al Jazeera that the framework agreement with Israel “contains no reference” to a timeline for Israeli withdrawal from the country’s south.

Speaking on negotiations between Israel and Lebanon in Rome, Mitri said Lebanon was counting on an American position that understood the need for Israeli withdrawal from the country.

“Washington is the sponsor and not the mediator in these talks, and if the sponsor is keen to resolve the issue, it should adjust the balance of power,” said Mitri.

The deputy prime minister said Israeli withdrawal and handing over of some villages back to the Lebanese army “may give some confidence to the talks”.

Iran’s army says it has carried out drone attacks on US facilities at Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Azraq.

The army said the operations would continue, adding that any attack on Iranian territory would be met with a response.
