Iran war updates: Tehran says US ‘lacks will’ for stability after clashes

Palestine’s Foreign Ministry has released a statement expressing its “strong condemnation” of Iran’s recent attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait, in which several ballistic missiles were launched and intercepted.

The ministry said this aggression was “an escalation in threatening security and stability in the Arabian Gulf region, and a direct assault on their security and safety”, further citing the “blatant breach of the provisions of the United Nations Charter, international law, and international norms”.

The ministry expressed Palestine’s “full solidarity” with Bahrain and Kuwait and its support “for all legitimate measures they take to protect their sovereignty, security, and stability”.

The US-Israel war on Iran does not meet the standards for a “just war” in Catholic teaching, Pope Leo reiterated during a visit to the Spanish capital, Madrid.

“I believe this has already been made very clear: In Iran, the criteria for a just war are not present,” the head of the Catholic Church said, responding to a reporter. “The theory of the just war dates back to centuries when it was impossible to imagine the weapons and the destructive capacity available to humanity today.”

The pontiff’s comments follow an earlier dispute with US Vice President JD Vance, who defended the war as a “just war”, a characterisation Pope Leo rejected.

The Israeli army says dozens of settlers blocked Palestinian cars and threw stones at the drivers at the Efrat Junction in the occupied West Bank, before one motorist hit an Israeli, lightly wounding him, and fled.

Israeli forces arrested the Palestinian driver along with several other suspects, the army said.

The Pentagon’s intelligence arm has raised the assessed threat level on Israeli spying from “high” to “critical” in recent weeks, according to US media.

NBC News first broke news of the change on Friday, with The New York Times issuing its own report the following day.

The news outlets cited anonymous sources as saying the switch came in light of concerns over increasingly aggressive tactics related to the US-Israel war with Iran.

They said the Pentagon’s Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) had raised the alert level amid fears that Israel is increasingly attempting to surveil top US officials. The aim is allegedly to understand internal White House deliberations about ending the war.

Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni has held a meeting in Tehran with his visiting Pakistani counterpart, Mohsin Naqvi, according to the country’s ISNA news agency.

Momeni reportedly announced an agreement between the two countries to increase the volume of economic exchanges to $10bn, and said: “I appreciate the active role of the friendly and brotherly country of Pakistan in mediating the reduction of tension between Iran and the United States.”

He added: “Part of the visit of the Pakistani Minister of Interior is dedicated to bilateral issues, including border security, the fight against drugs and combating terrorism.”

On his part, Naqvi was quoted as saying: “I am here to deliver a special letter from Field Marshal General Asim Munir, Chief of Staff of the Pakistani Army, and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, to Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, about the current situation. I think this message is an important message. I hope everything goes well and [the US-Israel war on Iran] comes to an end.”

As we reported earlier, the Pakistani interior minister is also expected to hold talks with Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Iran’s World Cup squad has been notified they must enter and leave US soil on the same day of their matches played in the United States, the country’s ambassador to Mexico says.

Due to the US-Israeli war on Tehran, Iran’s team is now based in Mexico, instead of their intended site in Tucson, Arizona.

“We can enter in the morning and we must leave the same day,” Iran’s envoy Abolfazl Pasandideh told reporters, explaining the visa restrictions.

The Iranian squad has three group matches in the United States, in Los Angeles and Seattle.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry has expressed its “condemnation and denunciation in the strongest terms of the continued Israeli aggression” against Lebanon.

In a statement, it affirmed its complete rejection of the targeting of Lebanon’s army and its sovereignty, and sent condolences to the families of the Lebanese army personnel who were killed “while performing their national duty”.

An Israeli soldier has died after sustaining serious injuries in southern Lebanon, the military says, while another soldier was killed during “an operational activity” in the area.

The Israeli military said air raid alerts have been activated for a “hostile aircraft intrusion” in the Margaliot area of northern Israel.

It added that details were under review.

Qatar has condemned Israel’s attack on a Lebanese army patrol that killed two officers and a soldier.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it considered it a “dangerous escalation and a blatant violation of the sovereignty” of Lebanon.

It called on the international community to compel “the Israeli occupation authorities to cease their repeated attacks on Lebanon, to respect international conventions and laws, and to fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701”.

The ministry stressed its support for Lebanon’s unity sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as all efforts to enhance its stability and prosperity.
