Trump peace plan leaves room for ‘interpretation’ and ‘manipulation’
Omar Rahman, a fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, says that Trump’s peace plan is an agreement that leaves Israel and Hamas equally dissatisfied, but that several issues can be negotiated in its implementation phase.
“There are a number of good and bad elements to it,” Rahman told Al Jazeera. “It is also vague enough for wide interpretation and even manipulation over its implementation phase, and there is a lot that needs to be negotiated.”
Despite its flaws, the peace plan offers a lifeline to Palestinians as they are being “slaughtered”, Rahman said.
“Everything that can bring an end to this bloodshed and allow the entry of aid is good,” he added. “There is very little alternative for Palestinians, as Israel has been carrying out a genocide for the past two years, and nobody is stopping it.”

UNICEF calls for babies in incubators to be evacuated from besieged Gaza City hospital
UNICEF says there are 25 ill or premature babies in incubators who need to be urgently evacuated due to Israel’s escalating attacks in Gaza City.
About half the babies are in Al Helou International Hospital, which Palestinian health officials said Israeli tanks surrounding it shelled overnight.
“It is time to move them because Gaza City again has become a combat zone, but moving them where? There is no safe place for them to go,” UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires told the Reuters news agency.
He said evacuating the babies, many of whom are newborns, would require transporting them in blanket-wrapped carts with portable oxygen supplies and drips, a dangerous trek that could expose them to infection, variable temperatures or supply shortages.
“Moving them seems like the best option we have now, … but at the same time, it’s a very risky one,” Pires said.

I have decided to stay in Gaza City as Israel seeks to wipe it out
For a few weeks now, the Israeli army has been issuing forced displacement orders to Gaza City residents, destroying towers and carpet-bombing neighbourhoods. Hundreds of thousands have fled south already, where they have found no safety.
Just yesterday, we mourned with heavy hearts and deep sorrow the killing of three members of the family of my father’s cousin, Yousef. The building where they had found shelter in the south was bombed just days after they fled Gaza City. Nedaa, Yousef’s wife, along with their children Roaa, 19, and Hamoud, 11, were killed.
The south of Gaza is not a safe zone, as the Israelis claim. Tents of displaced people are attacked every day.
The fact of the matter is that Palestinians in Gaza City now have a choice between two deaths – staying or leaving. Both are deadly.

UK Labour Party members vote to recognise Gaza genocide at conference
Members of the UK’s Labour Party have voted to recognise that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, in a move that increases pressure on the UK government to adopt the same position.
Delegates at Labour’s conference approved an emergency motion backing the findings of the UN Commission of Inquiry, which earlier this month concluded that Israel “has committed genocide”. The vote was strongly supported by trade unions.
The decision contrasts with Labour leader and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer as well as senior ministers, who have argued that the question of genocide should be determined by international courts rather than politicians.

Israel continues attacks on Gaza City amid talks for peace
As Netanyahu discussed the prospects of a potential peace deal in Gaza during a meeting at the White House, the Israeli military continued its offensive in Gaza City.
Emergency services told Al Jazeera that several people were killed and many have gone missing following an Israeli air strike that targeted a home in the Sabra neighbourhood, in the southern part of Gaza City.
An Israeli helicopter targeted Jaffa Street in the eastern Tuffah neighbourhood, while Israeli artillery, several times, shelled Omar al-Mukhtar Street, the main road in Gaza City.
Medical sources told Al Jazeera that at least 39 people have been killed across Gaza since dawn, including 28 in Gaza City.

Trump envoy implores Hamas leader to accept deal where ‘everyone wins’
Adam Boehler, the US presidential envoy for captive affairs, has asked Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal to accept the 20-point plan put forward by Trump, describing it as a deal where “everyone wins”.
“I want him to listen and hear that he was just offered something by two world leaders, two of the greatest world leaders… and Khaled has an opportunity to be great himself, and I believe that he will take it,” Boehler said, addressing Meshaal.
Boehler, who says he witnessed “negotiations back and forth with Hamas”, also described the plan as providing “everything that the Palestinians need, that people in Gaza need”.

Trump’s 20-point plan raises many questions
I think most people, publicly, are welcoming this plan because this is coming from President Trump and because it comes after the high-level week here and meetings with Arab and Muslim leaders. But I think there are lots and lots of questions.
Netanyahu has welcomed this, but does he really believe in it? He has, for some time, not been prepared to end the war or allow aid in.
Will Hamas accept this? Even if they do, there are all sorts of things to happen for this to succeed.
You have the release the captives and the Palestinian prisoners. Then you’ve got to try and form this international force. We have the Indonesians, but which other countries will come forward?
Then you have the board of governance, the role of Tony Blair.
And then what happens long term, and the sovereignty of the Palestinians?
The plan says there should be a credible pathway to Palestinian statehood, but that’s something Netanyahu has fought against his entire political career.
So I think it could bring short-term benefit for the people of Gaza, but with many questions about how this will all happen and potential hurdles on the way.

PA pledges to hold elections within one year of war ending
As we reported earlier, Trump’s proposal envisions that the Palestinian Authority will take control of Gaza once it has undergone a reform programme.
Now, the PA has reaffirmed its commitment to complete that programme, including holding presidential and parliamentary elections within one year of the end of the war, according to a statement carried by the Wafa news agency.
“We affirmed that we seek a modern, democratic, and demilitarized Palestinian state committed to pluralism and the peaceful transfer of power,” it added.
It also pledged to establish a “unified social welfare system subject to international scrutiny”.

PA welcomes Trump’s proposal
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has welcomed Trump’s plan, reiterating its commitment to work with the US and partners to reach a comprehensive deal that includes “paving [the] way for just peace on the basis of [a] two-state solution”, the Wafa news agency reported.
According to Trump’s proposal, the PA will take control of Gaza after completing a reform programme. Until then, Gaza will be governed by a “temporary transitional governance of a technocratic” Palestinian committee.

Hundreds of people killed by Israeli attacks on Lebanon in 10 months since ceasefire
Israel and Lebanon agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire in November after more than a year of cross-border fighting and two months of an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah following Israel’s exploding pager attack on the Lebanese group.
According to the deal, both Israel and Hezbollah should have pulled out from southern Lebanon.
Yet Israel has continued to occupy five strategic points near its border in southern Lebanon and has carried out near-daily air strikes, which it says are targeting Hezbollah members but which regularly kill civilians.
While the ceasefire required the Lebanese army to expand its role in Lebanon and become the only armed force in the country, Hezbollah has refused to disarm.
On Saturday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem reiterated that the group would not give up its weapons, just a month after the new Lebanese government publicly committed to disarming the group.
In July, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the Israeli strikes had killed about 250 people and wounded 600 since November.

Former Israeli diplomat says Trump’s proposal a ‘simulation game’
Former Israeli diplomat Alon Pinkas has expressed scepticism that the plan outlined by Trump and agreed to by Netanyahu would deliver on its promise of ending hostilities in Gaza.
“I don’t see an agreement yet,” Pinkas told Al Jazeera. “I see a great theoretical agreement. I see a simulation game.”
Netanyahu has a vested interest in this deal not working out, Pinkas said, and predicted that the Israeli leader would try to buy time in the coming days with the excuse of having his security apparatus assess the terms of the deal.
“I want to be optimistic, but I think this is too convoluted, too complex and there are too many contentious issues here.”
He added that while Hamas has been cornered into accepting the deal, he did not foresee the group freeing the remaining captives within 72 hours of an agreement as stipulated by Trump’s deal.

Gazans say Trump’s peace plan a ‘farce’
Residents of Gaza have expressed scepticism over the latest plan by Trump, dismissing it as a farce that would fail to end the war.
“It’s clear that this plan is unrealistic,” 39-year-old Ibrahim Joudeh told the AFP news agency from his shelter in al-Mawasi on the coast in southern Gaza.
“It’s drafted with conditions that the US and Israel know Hamas will never accept. For us, that means the war and the suffering will continue.”
Abu Mazen Nassar, 52, was equally pessimistic and feared that the plan aimed to trick Palestinian factions into releasing hostages held in Gaza with no peace in return.
“This is all manipulation. What does it mean to hand over all the prisoners without official guarantees to end the war?” asked Nassar, who was displaced from his home in northern Gaza to central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.
“We as a people will not accept this farce,” he said, adding: “Whatever Hamas decides now about the deal, it’s too late.”
