Release: Laurence Lee joins AJE

Laurence Lee joins Al Jazeera English as London correspondent

14 January 2007 – Presenter Laurence Lee was today confirmed as the latest recruit at Al Jazeera English, the 24-hour English-language news and current affairs channel, headquartered in Doha, Qatar. Laurence will present the news from the channel’s London broadcast centre, based in Knightsbridge.

Director of News Steve Clark said “We are very pleased to have Laurence on board. As the channel expands post launch Laurence compliments the Al Jazeera brand and the quality of journalism we are proud to represent.”

Before joining Al Jazeera English, Laurence was a correspondent with Sky News and most recently covered the Israel-Lebanon conflict from northern Israel. Prior to that, as Moscow Correspondent for Sky News, Laurence lived and worked in Russia where he covered news from countries in the former Soviet Union and central Asia, including the 2004 Presidential elections, the uprisings in Georgia and Ukraine and the aftermath of Beslan. For his reporting on a five part journey through Russia before the Presidential elections, Laurence won the Russian International TV Awards, and helped Sky News to win the RTS Award in 2004. From 2001 to 2002 Laurence reported almost exclusively from the Middle East.

Laurence’s career in journalism began as a BBC radio and TV news reporter in 1990. 

Educated at Coventry School, he went on to Birmingham University where he gained a BA Hons in Latin and French.
