The ongoing clashes in and around Cairo's Tahrir Square do not look promising for Egypt, which is scheduled to hold its first post-revolution elections in a matter of days.

Protesters are angry with attempts by the country’s interim military rulers to grant themselves special powers over the next elected government. They are calling for power to be immediately handed over to a civilian council.

With security forces deployed to quell the protests, Tahrir Square – the site of Egypt’s revolution that toppled long-time leader Hosni Mubarak – has spiralled into violence, leaving at least 20 people dead and hundreds wounded.

The unrest has raised several questions: Is it a good idea to still go ahead with scheduled elections? What role should the military play in Egyptian society? And where does Egypt's revolution go from here?
