The global economic crisis could put more women and girls at risk of violence, the UN special rapporteur on violence against women has said on the occasion of International Women's Day. Will rising unemployment disrupt progress towards gender equality? What progress has been made toward gender equality and what challenges remain? Do women in the developed and developing world face different challenges and how can these be overcome?
